My grandmother was from the Marquetand Candy shops family in Philadelphia back in the 1920's. She worked in the factory every day before and after school. She had to cut the fruits for candies and ice cream. She took off half her thumb one morning slicing peaches. Her uncle was furious with her. Someone got a fleshy, chewy peach in their ice cream that week. He was not about to throw out 50 gallons of sliced peaches!
In the 1950's they sold to Russell Stover, closing all the retail stores.
