Watch Sabrina Ionescu put on a show during the WNBA’s three-point contest
Sabrina Ionescu just made history during the WNBA’s three-point contest.
The New York Liberty star advanced to the finals of the WNBA’s three-point contest after putting up a solid 26 points in the opening round, and she was joined in the finals by Arike Ogunbowale from the Dallas Wings, and Sami Whitcomb from the Seattle Storm.
But in the finals, Ionescu put on an absolute show, and she left no doubt about who was taking home the hardware.
She scored 37 out of 40 possible points — setting a record in both NBA and WNBA three-point contest history — and made an absurd 25-of-27 shots during the round. At one point Ionescu drilled 22-straight shots.
You can watch her incredible effort here:
As you might expect, social media exploded after her performance.
The WNBA All-Star game is set for Saturday night, but Ionescu’s history-making performance during the three-point contest has already given the league an incredible highlight from the weekend.
I always wondered if shooting is something women could compete with men at, especially free throws. It's not mostly about strength.
But I looked this up: In the NBA there have been 14 50-40-90 seasons by 9 different players. (Larry Bird had 2, Kevin Durant had 2, and Steve Nash had 4, and was one free throw away from having 5) Larry Bird first achieved it in 1986/87. [50-40-90 means a payers shot at least 50% from the floor, 40% from three point range, and 90% on free throws.) In NBA G League only once has a player achieved that.
In NCAA men's basketball 11 players have shot that well.
In the WNBA it's only happened once. Elena Delle Donne has tolled the bell 0once, in 2019. It's never happened in women's NCAA basketball.
Curry congratulated her on this accomplishment.
“Destroyed” - is that the best the author could come up with?
I noticed in the clip when you can actually see where her feet were, she was a good foot+ beyond the 3-point line, closer to the NBA 3. Very impressive.
What is the WNBA?
3 point shot ruined basketball. You should be rewarded for earning the easy inside baskets through precision passing. Anybody can be a good 3-point shooter with practice.
NHHBA
Some players couldn’t even be a good free throw shooter with practice.
I haven’t watched bball for years, but I’ve heard that now it’s all about the 3. Perhaps that will enable women to enter the NBA?
No doubt.
The WNBA line is actually 20 ft., 6 inches; nonetheless, incredible performance. However, it should be noted that the WNBA plays with a much smaller basketball, which makes it easier to make shots.
Generally, if a player is a great 3-point shooter, they are a great free throw shooter. The mechanics are the exact same. The overall FG% (2 pts. and 3 pts.) is the most difficult for the modern player to reach because very few players have an “in-between game.” Larry Bird had a post-up game and mid-range game. Durant does also. Nash didn’t post up, but he could pull up from 15 feet and was an expert user of screens. After Rip Hamilton retired, there have been but a few decent mid-range players in the NBA.

Actually, that’s not accurate. Go to any high school basketball game and you will rarely see a boys player that can shoot over 33% from the 3-point line. Now, if by “practice” you mean shooting millions of shots with top-notch coaching, you would be correct.
A subsidized league of women, inferior to a high school boys team.
Oh, and they’re all fugly. At least volleyball has hot chicks that aren’t dykes.
She “blew up” the contest! “Crazy!”
Agreed. Today’s writers, teachers, students, media, and “influencers” have muddled the language with their meaningless slang. Words don’t mean anything anymore, by design. It’s not about facts or precision anymore, it’s all about “feelings”.
🤠
The size probably does matter a great deal at that level of play—but most of us aren’t there in any way, shape, or form. Kudos to Curry for congratulating her.
Pippen had a legit midrange game.
You are wrong. In 2013, they moved it back to 22 feet and 1 and 3/4 inches.

Can a woman even see the basket with 7’ tall men in front of her?
Waste of Network Broadcasting Airtime.
