My view is that one of the secrets is that humans are not masters of their own domain—we are part (a “colony”) of a larger “Empire” ruled by others—and as you say there are probably still others contesting the scope of the “Empire”.
“Good” and “bad” in such a context are very subjective—each side probably thinks they are the “good guys” and we may not have enough valid information to know which is which.
Humans get really jumpy when they can’t figure out what “team” they are supposed to be on—and even more jumpy when they find out they are the third string quarterback.
