US Secretary of State James Baker assured Gorbachev in February 1990 that NATO wouldn’t expand past East Germany. In May 1990 the UN Secretary General repeated that promise. In September 1990 Russia and NATO agreed to allow NATO to station its troops beyond the Iron Curtain but the deal only concerned a reunified Germany and the idea of expanding further east was unimaginable at the time.

Of course, the USSR fell a year later so you’ll likely argue the deal was null and void. But if a verbal agreement by the US to the leader of the USSR could be broken so easily a few years later, it’s no wonder the promises that America makes to other countries are viewed with such suspicion. And if America is free to ignore agreements, then so is Russia.

I’m not rooting for either side in this war, but I don’t fall for the ridiculous propaganda the western media is putting out. Both sides have legitimate grievances, but both sides should negotiate for peace today so this death and destruction can stop.
