Before this 12-mile-long lake existed, the Chattahoochee River, now dammed by Buford Dam making the lake, used to flood seasonally and occasionally kill thousands.

This gets trotted out every now and again because there have been some 700 deaths on Lanier since it was made. I was in the south of Georgia and heard tales of "Haunted Lake Lanier". And, like so many other places in Georgia, it's all for revenge by the dead black folks (in this case, the residents of Oscarville).
Ghost of black folks versus what the Chattahoochee could do? I'll take the ghosts and a crucifix (why take chances?)
