Sounds ridiculous - why would the theaters not simply refuse to show the movie in the first place? A lot easier than providing refunds to annoyed customers who will most likely not return to the theater they had a bad experience in.

Contractual obligtion.

Easier to turn down the sound, shut off the AC, refund the tickets.

This isn’t about money.

The AMC theatre I went to, once had an ac issue while we watched a christian movie. After the movie, they gave us all a free ticket to come back for any movie. So, not sure if they can give money back.
