I worked in DC on a short-term project for a week in 2001. The day I arrived a taxi driver had been murdered, he was the 5th taxi driver that week. The next day another driver was murdered. The Taxi Commissioner sent out a notice to all driver telling them not to pick up young black men after 9pm. There followed a howling of “racism” and demands that she resign. She stood her ground and said that her primary job was to keep taxi drivers safe. She pointed out that all the suspects in the murders were young black men who had been picked up after 9pm. She further noted that all the drivers who had been murdered were black or Hispanic. Still, the demands for her resignation kept coming from the WaPo and the mayor. Eventually, she was fired. It should be noted here that the Taxi Commissioner was a black woman.
