rural, central Kentucky. We have 25 acres of woods and 9 acres of lawn. And the whole thing, including house and a recently added 30x60 shop building set us back about 2/3 the price of a little three bedroom rambler in the outskirts of Seattle.
BTW, there is income tax here, but there is no tax on Social Security, nor the first $35K of annual non-ss income. My taxes, both federal and state, are ridiculously easy. No stress - no taxes.
“...Which Career Development Strategies Will Work Best In the Near Future?...”
As you say...retirement.
Well, the folks who electrified by the dream of not having to pay their student loans back aren't too 'electrified' now.

TL/DR (yet)
The slogan “You will own nothing and be happy,” sounds like my annual software subscriptions to Microsoft 360 and Norton.
You pay an annual fee and you are allowed to use their current version of the software. They can change the interfaces through updates anytime they want. They can decide at any time to access any personal data/images you’ve stored on THEIR software for management purposes..
So what happens when we are just subscribers for housing or transportation, or food? What happens to us proles when the terms of the subscription are updated say…to meet climate change use reductions?
Look no further than dairy farms in the Netherlands, Germans freezing in their apartments, and NYS/NYC.
Of course, we cannot omit the housing advocates in the US who want to reform “systematic racism” zoning laws so that low income small apartment buildings/ small home clusters can be built in suburban neighborhoods so that suburbanites also can enjoy the s _ _ t shows going on nightly in urban neighborhoods. You won’t own your home anymore so the environment will be similar to public housing estates in the UK.
Ditto for transportation. Yes, EVs will replace you fossil fuel-powered cars and trucks. But you won’t own them, so you’ll take what the AI’s algorithm says you need. And maybe the algorithm will say bus, bike or walk…everywhere.
The exercise will do you good since the one and only public health system has evaluated your last mandatory physical results and says you are overweight and need to lose afew. (Well, actually more than just “afew.”) In addition to the walking and/or biking, your food rations will be reduced. Since you can’t be trusted to make your own nutritional decisions, maybe you should be enrolled in a prepared meals service with the boxes delivered straight to your door. That also will cut down on unnecessary travel to the grocery store. Are you not glad to meeting the climate change use reductions?
And if you notice the boxes are getting lighter, don’t worry. A calorie-restricted diet is probably good for you. And it will help the planet, too.
(Of course, less people to provide all these goods and services too would be even better. Just sayin…)
Finally, since all these changes require long term commitment to implement, these matters are best left in the hands of experts. The people are just too shortsighted to be trusted to maintain the dedication and focus needed to implement such changes. But leaders are fickle, being easily swayed by public sentiment. So, rather than holding actual elections with their uncertain outcomes, let’s just turn the whole, messy creating and operating the reset society over to AI.
What could possibly go wrong?
Not to worry...
