The summary of the situation of Russian re-invasion to Ukraine covering the last 48 hours, as of 30th June 2023 – 22:00 (Kyiv time).

Ukrainian command has decided to create a new army corps in the structure of Ukrainian Ground Forces.

10th Army Corps was created in Poltava, and it groups several Ukrainian mechanized, artillery and other related brigades of Ground Forces of Ukraine. The unit received a military number A4767, and its own insignia.

The corps was originally reveled a few months ago as part of the leaked documents, but only now we received the official confirmation.

The Russian invaders have begun to gradually leave the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), and some ZNPP employees have also been instructed to leave the plant by 5 July, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (DIU) reports.

QUOTE: “The latest data indicates that the occupying forces are gradually leaving the territory of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Three employees of Rosatom [a Russian state corporation specialising in nuclear energy], who led the Russians’ actions, were among the first to leave the facility.

Ukrainian employees who have signed a contract with Rosatom have also been advised to evacuate. Under the instructions received, they should leave by 5 July.”

DETAILS: The Russians advise leaving for temporarily occupied Crimea.

Intelligence reports that the head of the legal department, Mantsurova, chief inspector Shtatsky and deputy head of the station for support, Gubarev, have already left for the peninsula.

The DIU also emphasises that the number of military patrols at the ZNPP and in the satellite city of Enerhodar is gradually decreasing.

Meanwhile, intelligence reports that the Russian occupiers have instructed the personnel who remain at the station to “blame Ukraine in the event of any emergency”.

BACKGROUND:

-On 20 June, Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of Ukrainian Defence Intelligence, said that the threat of an explosion at the (ZNPP) was real since the occupiers had additionally mined the cooling unit.

-On 22 June, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia was probably preparing to commit a terrorist attack at the ZNPP, which could lead to a radiation leak.

-Later, Budanov said he was convinced that the Russians’ plan to blow up the (ZNPP) had been fully prepared and approved, and the threat had never been as great as it is now.

-On 25 June, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the Russians have prepared and approved the scenario of a terrorist attack on the (ZNPP), and the world’s attention is insufficient.

-The United States said that it does not currently consider the threat of Russian occupiers blowing up the ZNPP “imminent”, despite Ukraine’s recent reports that Russia is preparing a terrorist attack.

-However, the Ukrainian authorities have nevertheless decided to conduct large-scale special civil defence training in Zaporizhzhia Oblast in case of a possible accident at the ZNPP.

Russia has been reported to be evacuating the nuclear powerplant at the ZNPP with Ukraine sounding the alarm about an impending disaster. Russian officials state that there is no plan to detonate the powerplant, but this was also said about the Nova Kakhovka dam. Ukrainian fighters have had partial success and are gaining ground on several fronts in Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk Oblasts.

The Wagner Group is still recruiting fighters across Russia, days after staging a mutiny that led Vladimir Putin to raise fears of civil war, the BBC has found.

BBC News journalists called more than a dozen Russian recruitment centres and was told it’s business as usual.

From Kaliningrad in the west to Krasnodar in the south, no-one believed the group was being disbanded.

Last week, mercenary troops led by Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin took over the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, marched on Moscow and shot down Russian military helicopters and a plane on their way.

Their mutiny was later aborted after a deal was struck.

Telegraph journalists took a closer look into Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin and his closest allies.

Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the mercenary group, called off his advance on Moscow and has gone into exile in Belarus after striking a deal with the Kremlin.

The leverage that Prigozhin developed over the last few years clearly altered his vision, leading him to believe that his authority outstripped Russia’s generals and even Sergei Shoigu, the defence minister.

With this in mind, his march on Moscow was not an attempted coup d’état aimed at replacing Vladimir Putin, but rather a fight for the redistribution of power, influence and wealth.

A top Russian general has reportedly been detained after Vladimir Putin launched a purge targeting supporters of the Wagner mutiny at the weekend.

Sergei Surovikin, the former commander of Russia’s forces in Ukraine, nicknamed “General Armageddon”, has not been seen since early on Saturday when he released a brief video calling on the mercenaries to end their rebellion.

Ukrainian forces are advancing “at least 500 meters” every day in the counteroffensive despite the lack of crucial hardware like F-16 fighter jets, the Ukrainian armed forces’ commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi said in an interview the Washington Post published on June 30.

Zaluzhnyi criticized those who complain of “slow progress,” adding the counteroffensive is “not a show.” President Volodymyr Zelensky also noted that the advance is “slower than desired” but that the campaign is not a movie.

Zaluzhnyi compared advancing without modern fighter jets to fighting with “bows and arrows.” Russian artillery fire sometimes outnumbers Ukraine’s by ten times, he added.

The Ukrainian commander pointed to NATO’s own doctrine, which calls for air superiority before launching an offensive. In spite of that, Western leaders are slow to supply the jets, Zaluzhnyi complained.

Denmark and the Netherlands said they may provide the coveted aircraft to Ukraine with U.S. consent, and Washington supported the plan to supply Kyiv with F-16s. It is not yet clear when will the Ukrainian Air Force receive them, however.

The general said he shared his concerns with his U.S. counterpart, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley, who is helpful and sympathetic to Ukraine’s needs. However, the decision on crucial hardware such as the F-16s does not lie with Milley, Zaluzhnyi noted.

Referring to the Wagner rebellion between June 23-24, Zaluzhnyi said it made no impact on the situation on the battlefield, as the private military company exited the front after the capture of Bakhmut in late May.

Ukraine’s military intelligence chief Kyrylo Budanov said on June 29 that despite some Wagner presence in southern Ukraine and occupied Luhansk Oblast, the mercenaries will no longer take part in hostilities against Ukraine. According to the Kremlin and Minsk, Wagner founder Yevgeny Prigozhin and part of the group’s fighters are being transferred to Belarus.

Zaluzhnyi emphasized that despite being undersupplied, Ukrainian troops are carrying out their given tasks and advancing at least 500 meters every day, even though the progress is slower than some observers would hope for.

The long-awaited counteroffensive is underway across the front line in the east and south of Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have successfully liberated nine settlements in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia oblasts, though, according to Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, the main attack is yet to come.

I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video I will tell you what happened on the four hundred and ninty second day of the war.

Day 492: Jun 30

Today the fiercest battles took place in the Kherson region.

After the disastrous Russian ground operation, where Russian airborne units suffered from friendly fire, Russian forces temporarily switched to distant methods of eliminating the Ukrainian bridgehead. Russian sources reported that Russian forces used incendiary munitions to burn the houses held by Ukrainians and then fired from heavy flamethrower systems TOS-1 to amplify the damage. However, in the morning, Russians discovered that Ukrainians not only maintained a presence in this region but also conducted a planned reinforcement and continued moving further.

Russian forces responded to these developments by organizing an even bigger ground assault. Russian sources reported that Russian airborne assault units used virtually all types of armored fighting vehicles to get their troops to the contact line and reduce the area of Ukrainian control. Unfortunately for Russians, Ukrainians used distant mining to scatter mines along the only road that Russians could use.
Geolocated footage confirmed that Russians lost several pieces of equipment, barely crossing the bridge near Oleshky. Russian military-affiliated sources also reported that those units that managed to get to the zero line struggled to implement their plans due to the overwhelming artillery and mortar fire. The Ukrainian side of the river is steep and high, which makes it easier for Ukrainians to provide fire support and repel Russian attacks.

Russian analysts started suspecting that Russian forces were doing precisely what Ukrainians wanted them to do, which was launch suicidal assaults along the only road that is also mined just to push Ukrainians from under the bridge. Russian fighters also started expressing discontent and stated that the Russian command was wasting manpower to do the job that must be done with a missile strike. Coincidentally or not, later that day Russian Air Force launched an Iskander strike on the main Ukrainian fortification.

Many Russian sources promptly reported that Ukrainian positions were destroyed, and Ukrainians no longer held the strongest part of the region. In order to capture the rest of the territories and kill the remaining Ukrainian soldiers, Russian forces used boats to deploy to the region in order to avoid scattered mines along the road.

Unfortunately for Russians, it was a Ukrainian trap. The moment Russians reached the beach and turned off the motor, Ukrainian drone operators started targeting Russian boats. Russian soldiers immediately jumped into the water because starting the engine takes time, and staying in the immobilized boat was sure death. The drones chased Russians closer to the beach, where Ukrainian infantry met and killed the Russian assault unit.

It turned out that there is a huge bunker under the bridge. Russian drone operator discovered that Ukrainians have an entrance to the underground facilities right near the bridge, so collapsing the bridge with the Iskander strike did not change the situation. In fact, very soon, Russian sources had to admit that the situation actually deteriorated.

Not only did Ukrainians increase the bridgehead, but they also started attacking the Russian bridge near Oleshky with kamikaze boats. The goal of these attacks was to cut off the last chance that Russians had to exert any control over the island and also get on the doorstep of Oleshky. Kamikaze boats proved to be incapable of achieving such tasks.

However, Ukrainian did not stop here. According to various sources, the number of Ukrainians on the islands has gradually increased to up to 300 soldiers. Assaulting such a powerful group became even more challenging, so the number of Russian attacks decreased, and Ukrainians gained more freedom of movement in the region. After conducting intense drone reconnaissance and identifying Russian blind spots,

Ukrainians started moving further. The latest reports indicate that Ukrainians somehow already got to the Russian side of the island. The drone footage shows how soldiers are carrying some cargo toward the foundation of the bridge. Russian analysts are raising the alarm that Ukrainians unexpectedly managed to mine the only Russian artery that supplied Russian positions on the island.
