The fact Stalin was not overthrown probably means his purges kept the army in line. Stalin, like Putin, didn’t give two shakes about the safety of Russia. It was Stalin first, Russia second. Same with Putin. I think you’ll find every successful autocrat behaves in exactly the same way.
