A Russian general had prior knowledge of Wagner group’s rebellion against Kremlin, US officials told New York Times. US officials are currently trying to determine if the general assisted Prigozhin with formulating his plan.
US officials told NYT that Gen. Sergei Surovikin could be the person who helped Prigozhin with his plans. Surovikin was formerly a top Russian commander in Ukraine and is known to be a close ally of Prigozhin. His participation in the uprising would indicate significant divisions within the Russian establishment. According to the US Defense Department, Wagner troops are still inside Ukraine after the weekend mutiny.
Pentagon press secretary Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder said that he is unsure whether they are moving from Ukraine. The Embraer Legacy 600 jet belonging to Prigozhin departed the Machulishchy Air Base near Minsk on June 27. According to FlightRadar24, Prigozhin’s plane had crossed the Belarus-Russia border, and was moving toward Moscow.
Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the head of state-owned arms manufacturer Ukroboronprom, Yuriy Husyev. Ukrainska Pravda reported that Zelensky had expected Husyev to increase production of the short-range Sapsan ballistic missile system. However, the production rate had so far fallen short, leaving Ukraine dependent on missiles supplied by its Western allies.

“Prigozhin’s remarks reflect the views of thinking Russians. That has also enhanced his reputation and of course, undermined Putin’s.”

Update on the conflict in Ukraine for June 25, 2023:
- Ukraine’s offensive enters its 4th week with the line of contact relatively unchanged and having suffered immense losses;
- Western governments and commentators have been increasingly calling for more “wonder weapons” and even Western military intervention as prospects dim for Ukraine;
- The Wagner mutiny in Rostov, southern Russia was an ill-conceived gamble by Wagner’s figurehead Yevgeny Prigozhin;
- The crisis resolved itself within 24 hours with Prigozhin’s exile to Belarus and Wagner forces being fully integrated into the Russian military;
- Ukraine’s offensive potential persists, however, amid a war of attrition, territorial gains at the cost of men and machines brings Ukraine closer to defeat, not victory;

The Parliament of Croatia has recognised the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
Ukraine’s foreign minister expressed gratitude to Croatian lawmakers for this decision.
“Today, Croatia recognised the 1932-1933 Holodomor as genocide against the Ukrainian people. I am grateful to the Croatian parliament for honouring the memory of millions of victims with this historic vote. The global recognition of the Holodomor genocide continues to grow swiftly,” tweeted Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The Holodomor was an artificially created famine orchestrated by the Stalinist repressive regime in 1932-1933 during the peak of collectivisation, which involved the forced seizure of private property and the establishment of collective farms. As a result, between four to six million Ukrainians, predominantly in rural areas, perished.
Earlier, the Croatian government expressed support for the parliamentary initiative to recognise the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people.
To date, the Holodomor has been recognised as genocide of the Ukrainian people by the parliaments of more than two dozen countries worldwide, as well as the European Parliament.
