Didn’t they test it without people in it in actual water at depth?? Multiple times??

Not 100% sure that the configuration was 100% hoop oriented but thats what people who seem to know are saying. It would fail immediately in internal pressure, but external pressure is a different case. It is possible that the hull could survive a few deep dives before failure.
