I’d argue that Putin has a much better chance of remaining in power than St. Nick (II) who’s been canonized. Nick’s authority rested on royal mystique backed up by centuries of tradition. Once that mystique, and reflexive obedience to royal edicts was overwhelmed by catastrophic defeats in WWI, the writing was on the wall for Romanov rule.

Nick simply lacked an instinctive, mechanical understanding of the elements of state power that kept him in charge. No one can say that Putin doesn’t understand or know how to control the siloviki. He stayed on as ultimate leader despite nominally handing power to Medvedev, then made himself effectively president for life.

But in Prigozhin, Putin has met a personality with the executive chops to mount a credible challenge. Prigozhin’s plain-speaking charisma is undeniable and, unlike Putin’s, requires little stage management. This clash of two self-made men should be epic, assuming neither scores a lucky win early on.
