Fiddler on the Roof has arguably the best collection of songs for a musical ever produced.
Sunrise, sunset....
I used to sing Sunrise Sunset at weddings.
That beautiful musical. My sister and I would listen to it very often. RIP Sheldon Mayer Harnick. Thank you for the gift of beauty you gave to the world with your lyrics.
A productive genius.
RIP.
Rest in Peace! Fiddler is SO GREAT. My fave is “if I were a wealthy man”. One big staircase just going up, and one even longer coming down, and one that’s going nowhere - just for show!
Heart it to the max!
Chaim Topol, who played Tevye the milkman, passed in March.
I wouldn't have compared Fiddler to Little Shop.
The "love is blind" aspect has been around since Taming of the Shrew, and likely before that. "Love is blind" was the cornerstone of Little Shop, but just one element of Fiddler, and mostly with the third daughter's story.
Hal Prince eventually produced, recruiting director Jerome Robbins and actor Zero Mostel, who would create an immortal portrayal of Tevye.
Interesting trivia...
In the original Broadway cast, Bea Arthur (Maude, Golden Girls) was Yenta the Matchmaker, Bert Convey (game show host) was Perchik (the radical), and Austin Pendleton (the stuttering lawyer in My Cousin Vinny and Santa in Christmas with the Kranks) was Motel the Tailor.
