Being in a catastrophically imploding/collapsing sub at several thousand feet deep is probably a very quick death, like getting hit directly by a 500 lb bomb.

The implosion happens faster than the speed of human perception. It was so fast, they never knew it happened, and felt nothing. It was as if the lights were switched off...instant nothingness.
