Jacksonville, Fl — A man and his two kids were able to escape a house fire early this morning in the eTown area, just south of Atlantic Coast High School.
It’s believed the fire started as a result of an overheated lithium battery in a golf cart that was plugged into the garage. The man in the home said he woke up when he heard the batteries explode.

That was the electricity grid telling the electric golf cart to ‘Get off me!! Get your own power source, you leach!’.
The wife was at work and saw the fire on Ring camera. Very easily could have had 3 fatalities here if she did not alert her husband.
“Honey, did you plug the golf cart in? Ladies Club meets tomorrow at the clubhouse and we’ve got the bunco playoffs.”
“Yes, sweetie...you’re all set. Just remember to unhook it before you leave. Don’t need an “accident” like last time.”
“Oh darling, you’re never gonna forgive me for spilling all of your golf clubs up and down the street, are you?”
It happens at beaches all the time. Add salt water to the equation
When the rc modelers first switched to lithium batteries they quickly learned to charge them in a fireproof container, preferably outdoors.
I never leave anything charging unattended inside the house, especially laptops.
While this is a coastal area, the community this occurred in is probably 5 miles from the ocean as the crow flies.....having said that, I’ve lived here since 1969 and never heard of this before other than last year a fleet of golf carts caught fire at the nfl stadium here....same deal, a battery caught fire igniting several other carts.
Since I'm also a Seasoned Citizen, I get lots of Facebook ads for lithium replacement batteries for golf carts. They're lighter, last longer, and hold more pixies than the lead-acid ones.
But they do have this one tiny thermal runaway problem...
“one tiny thermal runaway problem”
I know right?
Reminds me of looking for a new vehicle back in 2015. At the time GM was in the middle of an SUV recall for an electrical issue.
Against my better judgment my wife convinced me to go to a chevy dealer close by.
While looking at the very vehicles the recall covered I ask the salesman about it....his reply: it’s only a SAFETY recall”. He didn’t even realize how stupid his comment was. SMH
As you may expect, we took our business elsewhere.
However, when lithium batteries do catch on fire it's often very ugly. I'd think twice about charging lithium batteries unattended without safeguards built into the charge controllers.
You don’t have to have much imagination to foresee thousands of future house fires across America as more people own electric vehicles of all kinds. These fires could easily burn down entire neighborhoods where houses are tightly spaced.
The immediate consequence of this threat will be insurance companies will cancel home insurance if you park ANY electric vehicle at your house or in your garage.
I can see local and county ordinances passed to prohibit parking electric vehicle within close proximity to any single-family or multi-family housing.
These lithium batteries are a clear danger. It is madness to keep pushing them upon the public.
4 dead and 2 critical after another “e-bike” fire in NYC
There have also been several apartment fires from E-Bikes.
These electric assist bikes have 1000-1200 watt batteries.
Many people bring them up into their apartment to charge because they will get stolen if left other places.
Lithium Ion batteries in a golf cart? I thought 48v lead/acid batteries were the standard even on new carts. Must be a new “thing”.
Recharged my camera battery last night and when it was done, took it off the charger, but it was like, pretty dang hot- is this what happens when they begin to die? (My battery isn’t holding a charge like it used to)
Was wa5ching the show “the proof is out there” which showed a man standing at a counter waiting to pay for something when all of a sudden he jumps back, starts hitting his pocket, and flames burst forth. Apparently the battery in the pocket and his sweating caused the dang thing to erupt he suffered severe burns fromitt.
I once had two aa arteries in my pocket, and also some change, all of a sudden I felt a pain. Turns out it was the batteries which got juiced via the coins. Lesson learned the hard way.
Yep exactly. With everything being electric these days, households are charging nearly constantly one item or another- many times multiple items at once. So many things are going electric now- yard tools like trimmers, chainsaws, lawnmowers, hedge clippers, etc etc etc- then all the laptops, phones, music devices, e5cetcetc. Scooters, e-bikes, uniwheels, Segways, on and on it goes.
We are gonna see loads more fires in the future as a result
Oh goody. Let’s mandate everyone get electric cars with those things
Sounds like it.....you might wanna start charging it out in the yard 😏
Get rid of that battery NOW.
