What were they thinking, “off the shelf” parts? PlayStation control panel? What could go wrong.
Oh, no kidding! I wouldn’t use a game controller for anything related to real life. Nuts and bolts can’t be “common” either.
Exactly. “off the shelf” components for such an extreme environment is utter foolishness.
Granted the devices mentioned are likely not responsible for the issue at hand but it shows a hubristic lack of respect for the extremes they are playing with at the bottom of the ocean
I’ve been hearing communication between the submersable and the ship has been an ongoing issue.
I’m no engineer by any stretch but you’d think there would be a contingency plan in place in case of this very scenario like a self contained way for the submersible to asend back to the surface in case of emergency.
I hope it turns out well but it dolook good at all.
Military jets have ejection seats as a last resort for a reason.
The “PlayStation controller” bit I can understand; the Virginia class nuclear attack sub uses an XBOX controller to control the periscope (which is these days a “photonic mast” - all electronic). Sometimes it just doesn’t make sense to engineer something new and more expensive when a readily available item will work just as well.
