Obama suggests 'digital fingerprints' to counter misinformation 'so we know what's true and what's not true'

Obama says he's been target of 'deepfakes,' predicts next election cycle will be rife with false info

Former President Barack Obama suggested in a new interview the development of "digital fingerprints" to combat misinformation and distinguish between true and misleading news for consumers.

Obama sat down with his former White House senior adviser David Axelrod for a conversation on the latter's podcast, "The Axe Files," on CNN Audio. During the interview, Axelrod noted he's seen "misinformation, disinformation, [and] deepfakes" targeting Obama.

"As I've told people, because I was the first digital president when I left office, I was probably the most recorded, filmed, photographed human in history, which is kind of a weird thing," responded Obama. "But just the odds are that I was. As a consequence, there's a lot of raw material there."

The former president added that the deepfakes — digitally manipulated images, audio or video that appear legitimate — started with a version of him dancing, "saying dirty limericks" and similar kinds of activity.

"That technology's here now," continued Obama, who warned about the issue getting worse moving forward. "So, most immediately we're going to have all the problems we had with misinformation before, [but] this next election cycle will be worse."

He then suggested "digital fingerprints" to discern truth from misinformation.

It’s wonder Obama wasn’t taken out when they ran the cash for clunkers gig.

Yo Barry! We Americans don’t need misinformation czars. We do it ourselves. If it’s in the papers, on radio or on TV, it’s fake information 99% of the time due to the “media” hiring its own FART CHECKERS.

The information from the media and government about the JFK assassinatin is mostly correct. It is what is not said ... not said by the media.... not said by the government... that distinguihes the JFK event from more recent misinformation.

It comes down to a gun control argument.

Nov 9, my birthday a high school aquaintance came to my room at Wheaton College. He had just come from “Right Wing” militia training of Herb Philbrick of I led 3 lives training. My acquaintance told me that there was going to be an assassination of JFK in Dallas an he wanted to join him in stopping that unconstitutional action and prevent the commies from taking over.

I checked out his story with my YSA and YPSL acquaintances. They also were heavily armed and going to Dallas to prevent the Birchers from taking over.

On that day in Dallas there were hundreds of Right Wing Militia and hundreds of Left Wing Terrorists armed to the hilt. Yet hundreds practicing concealed carry and open carry (how do you conceal a long gun?) in Dallas that day and only 2 or 3 got a shot off.

Should those hundreds be prosecuted? Should those not heavily involved in fringe groups know about the fringe groups and have full disclosure of what is happening?

Bring that to present day. Should the public be informed by the media about the dog that did not bark?
