Why not? The NBA can afford it, and the WNBA exists to buy political protection for the NBA, which has some longstanding problems regarding the players’ treatment of women.

As do other professional sports, to be fair, but the NBA is probably the worst.

The WNBA would fold tomorrow if it wasn't subsidized by the NBA. I'm surprised the NBA's players association stands for it. They agreed on a 50/50 revenue split with the owners and money wasted on the WNBA is money out of the NBA players' pockets.
