It was an OK movie. Once again stuck on some special mission rather than the thick of fighting, and sort of left up in the air.
There aren’t many movies on WWI (there aren’t many on anything outside WWII especially and to some extent American Civil War), so to me you need more general warfare movies before delving into that detail.
As a result, the best movie I’ve seen for WWI is “War Horse”. It really covers a lot of what went on, no detail of maneuvers, but it shows all sides and the grittiness of it all.
The recent “All Quiet On The Western Front”, seemed to me to be the German answer to “1917”, rather than being true to the original novel and movie.
I thought the haunting scene where the protagonist stumbles out of a river and comes uopn a soldier singing “The Wayfaring Stranger” to his comrades just before they meet their fate in battle was both powerful and brilliant.
