Making Homelessness a Valid Lifestyle Choice is Wrong
New York Post ^ | June 12, 2023 | Betsy McCaughy

The mentally ill wound up on the streets.

The problem worsened when the Obama administration and homeless advocates won a lawsuit to prevent Boise, Idaho, from outlawing camping on sidewalks and public parks.

President Barack Obama’s Justice Department deemed homelessness a legally protected lifestyle choice.

Ridiculous.

A person who “chooses” street living, instead of shelter or hospitalization, is exposed to hypothermia, disease and crime.

On average, a homeless person survives only to age 48, losing 30 years of a normal lifespan.

It’s worse for women.

Allowing that choice is neither compassionate to the homeless nor fair to the rest of society.

Kudos to a handful of Democratic politicians who are bucking their party to press for involuntarily hospitalizing the mentally ill homeless.

Mayor Eric Adams is employing teams of EMS workers and health professionals in New York City to get the mentally ill homeless off the streets and subways and into hospitals.

Predictably, the mainstream press are slamming Adams’ policy for violating the “civil rights” of the homeless.

Portland’s Democratic mayor, Ted Wheeler, is pushing to loosen Oregon’s involuntary-commitment law, making it easier to hospitalize the homeless against their will.

Neely’s death is igniting a nationwide debate over homelessness — the only good to come out of the tragedy.

If he had been hospitalized for mental illnesses, maybe he’d be alive today.

Amazing that an idea like this needs to be in an article in a newspaper.

Amazing that people can't simply intuit that taking drugs 'for recreation' is a deadly cancer on society.

Amazing that those who pretend to be our leaders legalized all this stuff, creating this underclass that the rest of us have to deal with.

Tremendous coup for the communists in their quest to dissolve the US.

The mentally ill homeless deserve to be housed decently. It is cruel to make them live under bridges or in jails. Period.

So being a hobo—if only temporarily—is not a lifestyle option.

It might help you understand if you visited with some homeless people, better yet visit a homelesd encampment.
Then you will understand why most mentally ill drugged up refuse help. They are not “willingly” msking the choice to refuse help. Not as you understand the word “willingly”

“They are not “willingly” making the choice to refuse help.”

What do we do about the homeless? Subsidizing them is expensive, especially with healthcare, and encourages laziness. A society won’t survive if it puts too much if its energy into supporting the unproductive.

You know all of these things. What’s a government to do?

What’s worse is that we’re enabling this trash to infect and infest our cities. Sheriff Joe had the answer.

Why are the cures always to violate more Constitutional rights? Homelessness is not new, it is thousands of years old.

How about curing the Cultural, Societal, and ECONOMIC CAUSES OF HOMELESSNESS, not kick them while they are down. I can’t believe any truly moral person would ever consider classifying all homeless as mentally ill and imprisoning them against their will.

I suspect camping is not a popular wintertime practice in Boise.

The Biden/McCarthy “deal” ensures SNAP benefits for the “homeless”.

I wonder if somebody who is entitled by court order to camp out in a tent and does so is officially “homeless”?

I’ve traveled a lot on Greyhound.

The “homeless” were not known to be violent in years past.

There was a Columbo show in the 1970s. A character said he was paying $73/month for his room in Los Angeles.

How do you determine who is mentally ill during first responder interactions? Do they all have a doctorate in mental health? This comes from the ignorant assumption that “Homeless”= Mentally ill + Drugs + Gay + Perverts + Whatever else you can invent.

I have been personally hungry and homeless myself a few times and it is 90% MYTH!!!

What if I think anyone wearing a Trump hat is mentally ill? Would that be acceptable? Because that is what this concept will come to before it is over with.

Another question... Why do idiots not see that they better start being damned careful what they ask for? Because THEY or their Grandchildren will be next.

When are we going to learn there are a whole lot of doors we should just never open, FOR ANY REASON PERIOD!...

This stupidity is why we have what we have right now! STOP IT, Just say No! Enough forced social tyranny!

Back to the BILL OF RIGHTS!!!
