Looks like he’s really at home in the outdoors and able to live and stay there for quite a while. His gear has a sturdy, heavily used look that indicates he knows what he does in the outdoors. Maybe quite a while until he gets caught.
Those aren’t very good hiking boots, and the sandals won’t be much help either.

Yeah, your feet would get torn up and rotten pretty quick. However, the sandals would give time for the dogs to dry out when in camp.

Professors tend to be the single minded dogged type. If he thinks it is worth disappearing, he will. These guys are willing to change their life entirely over small things.
