Kaczynski was only 16 when he went to Harvard. In his sophomore year he was unwittingly enrolled in CIA sponsored experiment conducted by his mentor Professor Henry Murray. The experiment Ted Kaczynski participated in at Harvard involved psychological torment and humiliation and it lasted 3 years. He was traumatized for life.
It would be tough to make a straight line from the MkUltra program to Kaczynski’s psychosis and subsequent terrorist activities.
It probably didn’t help. Was is it “unwitting” or was he a volunteer? Probably not much of a distinction, participants had virtually no follow up, if at all, and informed consent wasn’t part of the program.
At one Kentucky prison (inmates were a favorite test cohort) several individuals were fed increasing doses of L.S.D. for 77 days. Sleep deprivation was part of the testing, they used electric cattle prods to keep them from falling asleep.
MkUltra was far more sinister than is widely known, even today. The majority of the initial L.S.D. “testing” was done in the 1950s, on military, government, academic, and prison populations. Then it went mainstream on the civilian population in the 1960s, especially in California.
Kaczynski was undoubtedly an intelligent individual. Nobody gets admitted into 1950s Harvard physics or math programs at age 16 unless they are remarkably gifted.
