Art Bell, when I was the overnight manager at a now defunct supermarket (one of the biggest in the US), I used to listen to Art Bell. Great shows he produced.
Art Bell’s show was a favorite listen of mine on late nights when I was having trouble sleeping or while driving.
I’m convinced that many of his most interesting and memorable conversations with callers were schemed up ahead of time between Art and his ham radio buddies on some backchannel shortwave band.
I happened to be driving and listening when the most notable of such a conversation first occurred - “Mel Waters” called to tell Art about a bottomless pit on his property in Elleensburg, WA, near where I lived at the time. This became the urban legend knows as “Mel’s Hole”.
