Aren't those two sentences essentially saying the exact opposite thing? No one was arguing that the Beatles were actually living in a yellow submarine. They were contending it was allusion to drugs, or some other symbolism.

As I recall the interview Paul was trying to convey that there was no substance or deep meaning to some words and to not take lyrics either figuratively or literally.

Paul Simon has expressed the same thought: words are selected sometimes just because they fit.
