But while the genre has sky-rocketed in popularity of late, there's one aspect of the dramas that appear to be keeping them firmly grounded in the 21st Century: the casts' cosmetically enhanced faces.
Earlier this month, the new series 10 Pound Poms - starring Michelle Keegan and Faye Marsay - started airing on BBC One.

One of the worst example of a modern look infecting a period drama was the 2007 adaptation of Jane Austen's "Mansfield Park". For some reason, Billie Piper was cast as Fanny Price. She looked so out of place with her highlighted hair.

Makeup and hair in both the 50s and 70s present a similar problem. Some get it right (High Noon), some hilariously wrong (The Conqueror).

Most period dramas set before automobiles don’t have nearly enough horse dung in the streets.

My nephew is a film school graduate who *hates* HD. He hates it because it reveals imperfections that weren't viable with DVD,VHS etc.

Also the actresses with all the tattoos.

They’re all starting to look alike and many of the faces/body shapes are quite freaky.

HD is so yesterday. 4k or bust!

Period dramas are ruined by unrealistic casting (e.g., casting an African woman to play Anne Bolyen, Henry VIII’s wife, as one recent BBC drama did).

I noticed that in movies when I was a lad. "How come Florence Nightingale has the same haircut as my mom?"

My pet peeve is showing members of the modern military with non-regulation haircuts. Hair over the ears, hair touching the collar. That sort of thing.

It’s customary for film school students to express a preference for black & white to color, and film to video. Grainy black & white film is especially beloved. It’s a form of aesthetic virtue signalling.

Anya Taylor-Joy is just plain weird looking.

If they are noticing these details what’s happening on the screen isn’t very compelling. Where’s the suspension of disbelief?

The more actors and producers make thigs look fake, the more people will accept computer generated actors. We have the technology right now to displace actors completely. There have been videos produced where people cannot tell the difference and often pick the computer generated actors as the real actors.
