He was emotionally moved by some action he had seen, not by Spirit-directed wisdom. He also decided that that should dictate actions between races on a large scale. Imo, it was a presumptuous invasion on the personal privacy of the black man.
Although I don't participate in the uncommon backwoods church practice of foot-washing, it is not ugly, rash, impulsive or presumptuous as was done here with the shoe-shining. If I recall right there is also an opt-out for those uncomfortable with it.

I was in one about 40 years ago - which shows you how rare it is. There WAS an opt-out. And no racial overtones. As it happened, I washed the feet of an old black guy. Then he washed the feet of a middle-aged white woman.
It was all about humility, not about “Gettin me some revenge!”
