“Never heard of it, was it a good one?”

In the 1960s, when we were poorer than we are now: yes, we thought it was good.

I don't know if it really was or we just thought that.

In my youth, Belk and Ivey’s were huge department stores in downtown Charlotte. Both were multi-story buildings on the main street...within just a few stores of “The Square”...the intersection of the two main streets downtown. ALWAYS a big treat to ride on the bus with Mom, from the poor side of town, to shop. Ivey’s eventually became Dillard’s. As malls were built in Charlotte, both stores moved to the malls as anchor tenants. The old Ivey’s downtown building was sold, becoming a high-end condo tower. The Belk building...not sure what eventually became of it. As a teenager, I was hired as an electrician’s helper and actually worked in the old Belk building while it was being rehabbed.

Both Belk and Dillard’s now have stores in the 3 local malls. Belk has around 300 stores in the Southeast USA.

I can’t remember the last time I went to either store.
