The literal English translation of the name "Zhongguo" (China) is “middle kingdom”. But through the course of history, the name has taken on many different meanings. It has been the source of great conflict.

How Did China Get its Name-Zhongguo? The name “Zhongguo” was first used by the ancient Zhou dynasty. The Zhou people believed themselves to be the center of civilization.

Later, it came to be the name for the empire founded in the Yellow River Drainage areas and other empires set up by other ethnic groups in the Han Dynasty.

I've been trying lately to learn more about China. It's really frustrating how little we hear about it and know about its history. And I know quite a bit, probably more than average. I even took a course in college on Asian Civ and we studied China. But still know very little.

I think we should rename China to “Kissingerville”.

There’s a YT channel called Fall of Civilizations. Since it’s just some guy who likes history and makes videos, it is insanely detailed at a level that wouldn’t appeal to the average drooling TV viewer. The episode on China was excellent...I watched it twice.

Kissinger’s book, “On China,” is actually a very good place to start.

The first imperial dynasty was the “Qin” or “Ch’in”. How we got “China” from that is a real poser...

PBS had a pretty good series, “The Story of China”. It covers the main dynasties. There’s obvious pressure from the Chicoms to put a good light on everything Chinese. There’s the obvious “security and peace vs civil war and banditry”, which the Chicoms want everyone to know is one reason they’re great, too. They sort of gloss over the successes of non-Chinese dynasties, the Mongol and Manchu, and the times when China was as divided and war-like as the Europeans. Not much is said about the many languages and ethnic groups conquered and suppressed by the Han.

In spite of that, it’s an interesting show with good video.

Places to start. Both of these guys - one from the US and the other from South Africa - lived, worked, toured, married, and had kids for 10 years in China. Before fleeing for their lives under Xi Jinping.
