It reminded me a lot of the way I have heard “To Anacreon in Heaven” played in the past.
Obviously you didn’t watch any of the pre-race activities. It was all about the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. Every speaker extolled the fans to remember the real meaning of the day and to give thanks to all those that had died to make days and events like the race possible. There was a 21 gun salute. A presentation of the colors. A playing of taps. A fly over by F-16’s. The invocation spoke directly to the meaning of the day. A large number of activity duty service men and women were on the track being honored, they we’re given free tickets for them and their families to attend the race and given a trip around the track in Chevy pickup trucks to the roar and applause of the 350,000 spectators.
Don’t comment on things you know nothing about. It’s not a good look.
I liked the Dixie Chicks version from Super Bowl XYZ, before their fall from grace:

I’m probably one of the few who remembers Tom Sullivan’s version from Super Bowl X.
The national anthem is one of the hardest songs to sing. And since I can’t sing anyway, I’m in no position to to judge her.
It was fine! Not my favorite, for sure. Not that great of a “live” performance (singing wise).
1968 Jose Feliciano
Jose can you see? NO!

Not bad. I thought they were going to jump into “Working for a Living” at first.
I honestly saw nothing wrong with her edition!!!
edition + rendition.....auto correct
Thanks for the info. I don’t have cable so I couldn’t watch it. It used to be on antenna TV. I watched the Memorial Day Concert replay instead.
Yes. The best!
The way they torture this song is criminal. At Trump rallies before the first two measures are out of the singers’ mouths I can tell if it’ll be tolerable or not. So far, only one was.
A bad voice I can deal with, but the ad libbing and scatting with the notes is awful. It’s all about ME!
As long as it didn’t take as long as Bleeding Gums Murphy’s version

Jewel wore her strawberry toned tresses cascading down her shoulders in light curls.
She strummed on her dark green guitar and rearranged the entire song for a much slower and soulful rendition.
Oooh! Somebody wants to be a novelist ...
I’m all for using a simple dignified version of the National Anthem. My favorite is an arrangement by Felix Vinatieri, bandmaster to Custer’s 7th Calvary. It was recorded as part of a 2001 CD of Vinatieri music called “Custer’s Last Band” played on 1870s vintage instruments. Copies may still be available from the National Music Museum. https://www.nmmusd.org/
No problem. Just to add to what was done on race day, in the parade on Saturday there were I believe three groups representing the military and a Blackhawk flyover. At the awards banquet Monday the emcee in his opening remarks again mentioned all the people who had died to protect our freedoms and give us the opportunity to have events like the race. Some of the drivers even made similar comments. Roger Penske, who owns the speedway now, is a pretty patriotic guy. So was the Hulman family the previous owners. I attended a number of races over the years and There has never been a lack of patriotism surrounding the race or remembrance of the true meaning of the day.
That being said there was also 350K people having a good time, doing American things like drinking adult beverages in copious quantities, soaking in rays on a beautiful Indiana afternoon, cheering for their favorite drivers and enjoying a great race. I doubt there was much queer beer being drunk and fewer trans people in the stands. The race has been run 107 times only missing the war years when the facility was being used for military purposes. It’s an experience encompassing great racing, a festive atmosphere, and love of country. Of the 350K people there I’d guess most are as conservative as the come. Doubt there are many left leaning progressive in the crowd. It is an American spectacle.
Thanks for the info.
But she really butchered that song.
They need to have the Marine Band and Choir to do it right.
