A fashionable mental health disorder. Also a core doctrine of the ruling class religion.
One of my many grandchildren explained the basic reason for the irrational Lbgt nuttiness.
He said the stupidest thing taught them over and over in school was “ you can be anything you want to be”.
Immature kids tend to take that literally and some kids never outgrow that type of thinking.
Well, Duh. If you’re a 12 year old boy who is afraid of his hormone driven colleagues, not interested in girls (yet), and not good at anything competitive, isn’t life a lot easier to be a girl. Especially an ugly undesirable one?
Chicken/Egg.
Many things have made having children and raising them unattractive to young people, causing many to abandon traditional sex roles and relationships built around reproduction. When children are raised to think the planet is overcrowded and being destroyed by human processes, that most land and sea species are becoming extinct due to humanity, that their own history is just a narrative built on a rotten web of lies, that their society is evil, that “men” are inherently evil and have rigged the game to subjugate others, that there is no such thing as morality, that there is no Truth, and that everything is mutable, there is little point in living, much less reproducing.
Add to that enormous social pressure to be “different” (by conforming...), and to achieve “victim” status and thus “matter” (because only Victim Lives Matter), and the massive shift to LGBTQetc is explainable. Many probably hope that pretending to be someone/something else will cure their existential angst, only to despair when it does not. The answer to whether mental illness is the cause or effect, is ...yes.
