A high school located in Texas has been forced to postpone its commencement after just 15 percent of the senior class reached the requirements to graduate.
In a letter sent to parents and families, Marlin ISD Superintendent Darryl Henson said most seniors did not make the cut due to low grades and attendance records.
District officials have postponed the ceremony to June in order to give students the time to catch up and hopefully check the boxes needed to obtain their diplomas.
'As a school district, we really want to make sure we're making the best decision in the interest of all children,' Henson told KCEN News.
The postponement of the major ceremony comes after the district had already announced a four-day school week aimed at increasing attendance.
In 2020, Marlin ISD lost their official accreditation from Texas after the district received an 'F' grade for accountability in 2019.
The district initially said just 15 percent of the class was eligible initially but that after a first warning was sent out, several additional students have met the standards.
As of May 25, the number has increased to 17 out of 38, still less than half.
The superintendent said he hopes the rest of the class will be able to meet the requirements in time for the new June graduation date.
During a mandatory Wednesday meeting with parents of seniors at Marlin High School, Henson blamed failed courses and kids skipping classes for the low number.
Parents expressed outrage throughout the meeting, saying their children were told they were on track to graduate only to find out otherwise in the last week.

How about the blame the teachers and the teachers union first?
How embarrassing, for everyone at that school.
The admin. should resign or be fired, including the superintendent.
That said, surely, some of these students themselves must have known that they didn’t know...anything!
They can pretend to have been cheated, but out of what?
Their families didn’t dig any deeper either.
Parents are ultimately responsible for the edumacation of their kids.
No shortage of blame to go around here.
There is like 1 white guy in the administration staff picture.
Flunk out 28 of the 33 in time and they’d had a 100% graduation rate. Pathetic cowards.
Who cares if they fail all their courses? Send them to Harvard. GIGO there.
Ever been to Marlin, Texas? Its nearby cousin is Calvert, Texas.
Both are leavings of the King Cotton days of the Brazos River Valley.
These kids were probably doing poorly in grade school. How many of them do you think can actually read and write? They think they know pronouns but they don’t. 5 will get you 10 that a lot of these kids should have been held back in grades years ago.
As for canceling it? That was wrong too. 5 kids worked hard and now those 5 are punished?
Anyine with half a brain can see that the school board is run by Grocho Marx. "we need the move more product? I know! we'll just give it away"
Declare every student an honor roll grad and Just mail the damn diplomas.
Throw in a harvard PhD with the H.S. diploma and really make some news!
The dumbing down of society goes on unabated.
Marlin ISD Superintendent Darryl Henson could be Obama’s son.
It appears the entire school administration is Black, most of the students too.
Notice it’s not mentioned in any of the articles.
I bet everything will be ok in June and teachers etc will be praised as heros.
If they think they can increase the number by waiting a few weeks sounds more like administrative issues…
High School grad these days (at least where I live) is different then when I graduated about 35 years ago. Where just showing up and passing your classes meant you graduate. Now there are all sorts of other things you need to do to meet the requirements.
If it was purely grades then waiting a few more weeks isn’t going to change the numbers
It’s increased to 17 kids and they should hold the graduation for them.
Simple...
Cancel the ceremony...
Mail the 5 kids their diplomas...
Mail the other 28 students letters detailing registration for 12 grade next fall...
Next issue!
So the school failed just as badly as the students. They should have been keeping their records updated all along and providing status reports to the students and their parents.
No word about the curriculums that the teachers pushed* and defended against EVERY parent who told them that the curriculums didn’t work.
*including Whole Language reading (now called “sight words”) and calculators in Math class.
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
And the rest of us know that it's the fault of the education establishment. We blame the teachers, curriculum, and administration.
