I think their error was mistaking the investment of the fort at Vicksburg by Grant’s siege, which took place around late May of ‘63, with the idea that the Fort had fallen. Surprisingly, the NYSlimes at the time was considered a Republican organ that reported favorably on Lincoln and his administration. In this instance, they took it too far.
