OK, it's been a stressful week already and I needed a break from the usual BS.

I'm going to pick 2 for starters that are in different decades but for the time frame were the best in My opinion/era/Genre. I don't care what type of music but this Thread is (hopefully) going to be about Percussion Solo, meaning only 1 person on the Instrument(s).

1) Neil Pert from Rush.

2) John Bonnham from Led Zeppelin.

BTW- both of My picks are playing for God in Heaven...

“Peggy Sue” - not a solo but I love the drumming throughout
the whole song.

Bach or Beethoven, played on the piano.

Oh. Maybe you didn’t mean that type of percussion solo?

Carl Palmer (of EL&P fame). Nothing fancy. Two sticks. One snare...

Oh boy, you don't want to open that can o' worms. Because what will be considered great? Horowitz playing Scarlatti with precision? Yuga Want playing a monster Liszt kuncklebreaker? Gieseking playing a delicate Debussy number?

Artistry? Phrasing? Or just NPS (notes per second)? Does a flubbed note rule one out of the running (Cortot, Rubenstein)?

I need to just stop.

Yes, YYZ in my opinion is the best percussion solo I’ve ever been witness to live. Neil Peart was an awesome drummer.

Ringo has been described by Paul as a human metronome. I tend to agree. Bonham was a musical genius. I’ve seen detailed analysis of his performances that prove it. Neil Peart was far above both. Number One.

It’s how I feel about musical theater songs. If only a performer or two on the planet can perform it decently, it’s close to useless.

Any competent player with sensitivity and a strong piece from either oeuvre can make magic with what I suggest.

50+ posts without Moby Dick even being mentioned? I know it’s cool to not immediately play the Zeppelin card, but come on!
