Because then you are trapped. If you do buy her flowers, she pouts and says "You only bought them because I had to bring the subject up." But if I don't buy her flowers, it's because I don't listen to her!
You just can't win!
Since my wife and I pool our finances, I always feel silly buying her things on my own because I am using "our" money to buy them. One time I got a big box of chocolates for Valentine's Day at a chocolatier in Manhattan. It was something like $74.99 plus tax. Right away I start getting the texts because she gets a text everytime I use one of our cards.
"What was that $100 you just spent in New York for?"
I wanted it to be a surprise because Valentine's Day was still days away. But she finally wore me down and got it out of me. I said "OK, it's a box of chocolates that I wanted to surprise you with for Valentine's Day." So now she's upset her surprise got ruined!
Oh well, I realized a long time ago that YOU JUST CAN'T WIN!
All in all, we get along fine and we are still married after 36 years but there are moments...
