That was my take when the Tawana Brawley fiasco reared it's ugly head. Though a glaring red flag popped up when she claimed she was raped in the back of a Wappingers Falls,NY patrol car. The Wappingers Falls PD, like the NYPD, Chicago PD and many law enforcement agencies in the US and Canada at that time were using Dodge Diplomats. Most cops liked them for their handling and performance but a common complaint was the lack of room, especially with all the police equipment crammed into them. The back seats in particular barely had enough room for hauling suspects around let alone doing the you know what. I'm surprised the ACLU never filed complaints about them

This has happened repeatedly - to Nick Sandmann, the falsely accused and smeared Covington Teen, the Lacrosse team boys from Duke, falsely accused by a black stripper of gang rape, the Tawana Brawley case, where she accused Steve Pagones of raping her.

ALL was believed and widely disseminated by the media for weeks and sometimes months before the truth came out - meanwhile the falsely accused had their lives turned into hell.

There was some justice for Pagones, finally, this is from 2013.

Brawley, 41, last week paid the first of many checks to Steven Pagones whom she owes hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In 1987, the then-15-year-old dragged the ex-prosecutor's name through the mud when she called him a 'gang-raping, kidnapping racist.'

Brawley was ordered to pay $190,000 in 1998 but the figure has ballooned with interest.

A court ruled in January that her wages as a nurse be docked to settle her debt.
