Ukrainian forces control southwest of Bakhmut and make gains in areas around the city
Deputy Defence Minister Yevhen Kizilov

https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/05/18/7402837/

As of the evening of Thursday, 18 May, Ukrainian forces control the southwest of Bakhmut and are making gains in some areas around the city.

Source: Hanna Maliar, Ukraine’s Deputy Defence Minister, on Telegram

Details: Maliar said that Russia has deployed most of its reserve forces to Bakhmut, significantly reinforcing its troops in the city. Russian forces conducted numerous assaults on Thursday, but the Ukrainian Armed Forces successfully repelled all Russian assaults.

Russian troops attacked the Ukrainian forces on the northern outskirts of Bakhmut; those attacks were equally unsuccessful. Ukrainian forces advanced by up to 500 metres in parts of the Bakhmut front.

Maliar said that fierce fighting also took place on the southern outskirts of Bakhmut. Russian forces went on the offensive in an attempt to regain the territories they had lost, but sustained losses and were not able to accomplish their goals. Ukrainian forces advanced by up to one kilometre in this area.

She has stressed that the defence of Bakhmut and its outskirts is fulfilling its military tasks. Ukraine is now gaining time for certain planned actions.

The Deputy Defence Minister stressed that the commanders of the Khortytsia Operational and Strategic Group of Forces – the group responsible for the Bakhmut front – maintain control over the situation in and around Bakhmut.

The missile nicknamed the ‘finger of god’, which has been used in every American conflict since Vietnam, is being used to terrorise Russian armour in Ukraine.

The Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wireless-guided weapon system, also known as the TOW missile, is a heavy anti-tank precision assault weapon system consisting of a launcher and a missile.

The weapon system has been used by the American military since the Vietnam War and during the conflict in Iraq.

Ukrainian forces strike Russian ammunition dump and 7 electronic warfare systems – General Staff report
Tetiana Lozovenko
Thursday, 18 May 2023, 18:38
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/05/18/7402827/

Over the course of the past 24 hours, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have struck one Russian ammunition storage point, an anti-aircraft missile system, and seven electronic warfare systems.

Source: General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Facebook, information as of 18:00 on 18 May

Details: Over the course of today, Ukrainian aircraft carried out six airstrikes on areas where Russian military personnel and equipment were concentrated. Ukraine’s Defence Forces downed 21 Russian cruise missiles and seven reconnaissance drones.

Units of Ukraine’s Rocket Forces and Artillery struck an area where Russian military personnel and equipment were concentrated, an ammunition storage point, three field artillery units, an anti-aircraft missile system, seven electronic warfare systems, and a radar.

Over the course of today, Russian forces conducted 36 missile strikes and 23 airstrikes and deployed multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) to conduct around 30 attacks on positions of Ukrainian forces and civilian settlements.

Russian forces are continuing to focus their main efforts on the Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka fronts. Over the course of the day, around 17 combat engagements took place across these four fronts, with the cities of Bakhmut and Marinka still at the epicentre of hostilities.

There is no evidence that Russia is forming offensive units on the Volyn and Polissia fronts, and the operational situation there remains much the same as before.

On the Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna fronts, Russian forces are continuing to maintain their presence in areas near the Russian-Ukrainian border.

Throughout the day, they deployed mortars and artillery to fire on Leonivka (Chernihiv Oblast); Boiaro-Lezhachi, Pavlivka, Basivka and Myropillia (Sumy Oblast); and Starytsia, Synelnykove, Ohirtseve, Hatyshche, Nesterne and Budarky (Kharkiv Oblast).

On the Kupiansk front, Russian forces deployed mortars and artillery to fire on Kamianka, Kolodiazne, Fyholivka, Novomlynsk, Dvorichna, Zapadne, Masiutivka, Lyman Pershyi, Tabaivka and Berestove (Kharkiv Oblast) and Stelmakhivka (Luhansk Oblast).

Russian forces did not undertake offensive operations on the Lyman front but attacked Makiivka and Bilohorivka (Luhansk Oblast) and Verkhnokamianske and Spirne (Donetsk Oblast).

Russian forces are continuing to carry out offensive operations on the Bakhmut front. Fighting for the city of Bakhmut continues. Over the course of today, the Russians made unsuccessful attempts to advance on Ivanivske. Russian aircraft struck areas in and around Bohdanivka and Bakhmut. Vasiukivka, Zaliznianske, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Chasiv Yar, Bila Hora and Pivnichne (Donetsk Oblast) came under Russian fire.

Russian forces attempted to advance on Sievierne on the Avdiivka front but were unsuccessful. Over the course of the day, Russian aircraft struck areas in and around Novokalynove and Avdiivka. Russian forces also shelled Novokalynove, Berdychi, Avdiivka, Tonenke, Pervomaiske, Karlivka and Nevelske (Donetsk Oblast).

On the Marinka front, Ukraine’s defence forces once again repelled numerous Russian assaults near the city of Marinka. Russian forces continued to target frontline civilian settlements and shelled Krasnohorivka, Marinka and Pobieda in Donetsk Oblast.

Over the course of today, Russian forces did not undertake offensive operations on the Shakhtarsk front, though they shelled Vuhledar, Novoukrainka, Prechystivka and Shaktarske and conducted airstrikes in and around Zolota Nyva and Velyka Novosilka.

Russian forces are on the defensive on the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson fronts. They conducted airstrikes on areas in and around Novopil (Donetsk Oblast) and attacked Burlatske (Donetsk Oblast); Olhivske, Charivne, Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Stepove, Kamianske and Plavni (Zaporizhzhia Oblast); and the city of Kherson (Kherson Oblast).

Russian occupation forces are continuing to put pressure on civilians living in temporarily occupied territories of Kherson Oblast, in particular in the Henichesk district, where they are threatening to deport anyone who refuses to obtain a Russian passport.

Russian military personnel have arrived in some settlements in the Kakhovka district, where they occupy not only vacant houses but also houses where civilians are currently living. They threaten to throw anyone who objects out of their own homes.

Russian forces appear to have stepped up their counterintelligence measures in the occupied parts of the Kherson district. They have set up additional checkpoints on roads between settlements and are thoroughly inspecting vehicles and their owners’ documents as well as the contents of their phones.

Is the Asia Times the CCP mouthpiece?? If so, I was not aware. I am an occasional reader and seen some pretty accurate, well-written articles there over the years. Some things I agreed with, some were off-base but worth a read.

“Is the Asia Times the CCP mouthpiece??”

Didn’t start off that way, but when they reconstituted it, originally as “Asia Times Online”, they based it in Hong Kong, and well, Hong Kong has fallen to the CCP now. So they tend to toe the party line nowadays.

Conversation with a prisoner of war and a call to relatives
Russian army in Ukraine. Captured, wounded soldiers and officers of the RF Armed Forces.

Pavel Shvets was born on January 9, 1983 in the town of Stanitsa, Rostov Region. Before the war, he was a plumber, and during the war he was mobilized as a motorcycle shooter. He was called for retraining in mid-September 2002. Shvets received a new call for mobilization instead of retraining. On that day, there were 43 people from his draft board. The appeals concerned primarily the workers, and there were few volunteers. The new law threatened those who refused with long prison terms. The prisoner has only a secondary education and a plumbing diploma. He used to work in emergency services and repair houses. Having received a call, he was sent to the city of Volosk for a shift. Then he was sent to the training ground, where he stayed for several days. There were no denials or convictions. The shooting range does not remember exactly, but they shot from the store two or three times. The prisoner did not have special armor, but he wore a Kevlar helmet. The helmet was made of thick leather, it was called kulpak. Later he was transported to the Rostov region and further to Ukraine. All this happened in October and November.

Norway will give up to 8 M-270 MLRS to Ukraine and will step up training Ukrainian soldiers
European Pravda
Thursday, 18 May 2023, 19:15
https://www.pravda.com.ua/eng/news/2023/05/18/7402835/

Norway’s Defence Minister Bjørn Arild Gram announced additional military aid for Ukraine on Thursday, 18 May, saying that Norway will also step up its participation in training Ukrainian military personnel in the UK.

SOURCE: Bjørn Arild Gram during a press conference with UK Defence Minister Ben Wallace

DETAILS: Norway’s Defence Minister said that Norway provides military assistance to Ukraine through the UK-led International Fund for Ukraine and through Operation Interflex, a UK-led training programme for Ukrainian recruits.

“Norway is a substantial contributor to the Fund and we also contribute to the training of Ukrainian soldiers, both here in the United Kingdom and in Norway. From the summer, Norway will double our number of instructors in Operation Interflex,” he announced.

Gram also said that Norway will give Ukraine additional long-range artillery systems and radars.

“Norway [is providing] three Arthur artillery location radars and up to eight long-range rocket artillery [systems], MLRS type. These donations are made in close collaboration with the United Kingdom,” he said.

Like the US-made HIMARS systems, M-270 multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) can strike targets up to 80 kilometres away. Ukraine received several shipments of MLRS from the UK last year.

BACKGROUND: In March, the Norwegian Armed Forces announced the delivery of eight Leopard 2 tanks and four support vehicles to Ukraine.

Many Pro-putin types have long standing reputations of not providing any positive comments toward discussion

Non-support of Ukraine doesn't equal support of Russia.

We want no more billions of dollars and military aid going to a corrupt regime led by a dancing bisexual puppet, with potential American troops on the ground.

The 2000s called, OK?
