We see a lot of this in Palm Beach County - and it was common in Los Altos/Los Altos Hills CA as well - to wit: Anyone with $10M+ to spend on real estate wants their dream expressed; they do not want to spend $10M+ to buy someone else's attempt to express their own dream. Evander Holeyfield had a property outside of Atlanta that some suggested he spent $115M on. Three swimming pools, basketball courts, helipad, etc., etc., etc. It was foreclosed upon after he tried to sell it for several years. It auctioned for something like $9-$10M.

Los Altos was a nice place before people started wrecking the houses. The houses were modest ranch-style homes that got the job done. Now you have these preposterous, ostentatious places being built that don’t match the original tenor of the neighborhood.
Just because people have money doesn’t mean they also have good taste or a sense of proportion.
