On a related theme to this piece, I have a family member who only buy cars built 2005 and older. The first reason is theft... the cars he has may run fairly well but aren’t worth enough for anyone to steal. The second reason is that 2005 was when the pace of the onboard electronics started to pick up on what data was all being collected on owners/drivers etc. Who needs or wants that....

There's a mechanic in my old stomping grounds in Idaho who won't buy anything newer than 2011 for similar reasons. He says in 2012, manufacturers started going nuts with computer modules taking over basic functions of everything.
