Day 440: May 09
Today the biggest news once again comes from the Bakhmut direction. If yesterday Ukrainians cleared up to 1 km of trenches on the northern Bakhmut’s flank, then today Ukrainians liberated 3 square kilometers on the southern Bakhmut’s flank.
The day started with Prigozhin’s announcement that Ukrainians launched a powerful counterattack south of the Ivanivske highway and breached Russian defense and penetrated it by half a kilometer already by 10 am. He said that he received numerous messages from his soldiers saying that the Russian 72nd Brigade abandoned their positions and ran away the moment they saw Ukrainians tanks and armored fighting vehicles. He also said that the Russian Ministry of defense deceived him and, after the first day cut off supplies once again. Prigozhin raised the alarm and said that now the Wagner Group is not only with no ammunition but also with bare flanks, which Ukrainians will definitely try to capitalize on to launch the counteroffensive.
Closer to the evening, the Ukrainian side confirmed that almost everything Prigozhin said is true and showed combat footage, where Russian soldiers are indeed abandoning their positions and running Day 440 - 09 May - up1 - 1. textaway before Ukrainian assault units even reached their positions. It looks like the emotional buildup of anxious anticipation of the Ukrainian counteroffensive broke the Russian spirit, and they thought that staying on the zero line is sure death. Nonetheless, Ukrainian fighters also reported that at least 20% of troops belong not regular army but to the Wagner Group and that they abandoned their positions and ran together.
The assault was conducted by the fighters from the 3rd Assault Brigade. As you might still remember, these were the fighters that broke the momentum of the Russian advancement in the Khromove region and cleared a lot of trenches. Soon they were relocated to an unspecified area, which turned out to be the southern flank. Ukrainians assaulted Russian trenches with tanks and armored vehicles and eliminated those who did not flee, which amounted to 64 troops when the report came out and is likely higher now as the operation continues. As a result, Ukrainians completely eliminated the second Russian bridgehead on the western side of the canal. Previously, Russian also had another bridgehead near the forest, which Ukrainians eliminated around a month ago.
Prigozhin was furious at the 72nd Brigade. He said that his army lost 500 men to establish a powerful bridgehead – the positions were ready, and all the 72nd Brigade needed to do was to use the trenches and hold the defense, but in one day, they lost half of it. Because of the collapsing front line, Gazprom’s Private Military Company refused to go to these positions as they did not want to deal with the falling apart front.
The problems on the flanks exacerbated the difficulties that Wagner forces are facing in the city itself. Today at night, Ukrainians soldiers reported that they noticed that Russians started moving into the grey zone, which made Ukrainians expect a huge storming operation during the night. However, it did not happen because of the extensive HIMARS raid across the whole Bakhmut direction. It was reported that Ukrainians destroyed multiple ammunition depots, forces, and equipment concentrations, rapidly creating shortages. These shortages likely forced the Wagner Group to reconsider its plans and go on the defensive, especially given the high level of uncertainty and the necessity to face the imminent large-scale mechanized assault or the counteroffensive operation.

Ukraine’s Third Assault Brigade confirmed on May 9 that the 72nd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces has fled Bakhmut.
The news, prior to the confirmation, was originally announced by Wagner mercenary group founder Yevgeny Prigozhin.
“Prigozhin’s report about the escape of the 72nd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces from Bakhmut and the ‘500 corpses’ of Russians who remained there is true. The Third Assault Brigade is grateful for the publicity of our success at the front,” the Third Assault Brigade wrote.
According to the statement, assault troops killed 64 Russian soldiers during offensive operations in the southwestern outskirts of Bakhmut.
Additionally, “another 87 were on the way,” the statement read. Among the casualties were Wagner mercenaries. Five Russian soldiers were also captured.
Bakhmut has been the epicenter of fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces for the past nine months.
Wagner mercenaries have served as the primary shock troops in Russia’s attempts to expand its control over Donetsk Oblast. However, in the past nine months, they have only made incremental gains, with Ukraine still holding parts of the city.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have CONFIRMED the statement of YEVGENY PRIGOZHIN, the head of the Wagner Group, that the 72nd Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade of the Russian Armed Forces fled Bakhmut.

DETAILS: The military personnel reported that within two days, on the southwestern vicinities of the city, attack aircraft of the 3rd Separate Assault Battalion, which belongs to the Azov eliminated 64 invaders; data on the elimination of another 87 is being clarified. The brigade notes there are Wagnerites among these fighters.
IN ADDITION, the defenders captured five Russians and destroyed several warehouses of the Russian ammunition storage, mortars and “more than one infantry fighting vehicle”.

Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Ukraine once again became the breadbasket of Europe, and its grain has increasingly fed the Middle East and Africa. According to the European Commission, Ukraine accounts for 10% of the world wheat market, 15% of the corn market, and 13% of the barley market. With more than 50% of world trade, it is also the main player in the sunflower oil market.
As a result of Russia’s invasion nearly a year ago, there is a looming threat of food insecurity for those who have come to depend on the flow of those crops from Ukraine. That fact isn’t lost on the Ukrainian farmers who now face losing life or limb just to help feed the world.
“A number of farmers have been killed driving tractors over land mines,” Illinois farmer and philanthropist Howard G. Buffett, told Farm Futures, an industry trade magazine. “I was told the guys who were in combines more likely survived.”
AUDACIOUS FARMERS
Today the farmers take their lives into their own hands by just doing their job, but last spring, they were far more emboldened when a few farmers literally drove off with Russian tanks and other vehicles.
Videos of these audacious farmers soon circulated on social media.
One in particular purported to show a farmer tow away a Russian MB-TB, a Soviet-era multipurpose amphibious auxiliary armored tracked vehicle that was seemingly abandoned by its crew after it ran out of fuel.
That video went viral, having been seen millions of times, and became an early propaganda coup for Kyiv, and arguably one of the first of many humiliations to come for Moscow.
UKRAINIAN FARMER STEALS RUSSIAN TANK WITH TRACTOR!
The humble Ukrainian tractor then became one of the de facto symbols of Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s unprovoked invasion.
Though the number of actual farmers who used their tractors to steal a Russian tank was likely small, it was significant enough that Ukraine’s National Agency for the Protection against Corruption (NAPC) declared that captured Russian tanks and other equipment would not be subject to declaration, nor would those items be taxed.
“Have you captured a Russian tank or armored personnel carrier and are worried about how to declare it? Keep calm and continue to defend the Motherland! There is no need to declare the captured Russian tanks and other equipment, because the cost of this ... does not exceed 100 living wages (UAH 248,100),” NAPC’s press service said in a statement to the Interfax Ukraine news agency in March 2022.
UKRAINE MAINTAINED A SENSE OF HUMOR
A number of fake videos also circulated, showing everything from a Soyuz rocket to the Russian Navy’s cursed aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov being towed away.
In June, the iconic image of Ukraine’s resistance was commemorated on a postage stamp. The new design, which showed a tractor towing away a disabled Russian tank, was the result of a contest conducted by Ukrposhta, the country’s national postal carrier. Anastasia Bondarets won this second stamp-design contest – following a prior challenge, which depicted the defiant response by the Ukrainian defenders of Snake Island in the early days of the invasion.
Bondarets’ entry was among the more than 1,500 received in the contest that Ukrposhta called “Good evening, we are from Ukraine.”
