“Carbon II: Toyota pioneered hybrid technology which is one of the best ways to reduce carbon. As TMNA EVP Chris Reynolds said at our Fly-in, “Toyota is the O.G. of carbon reduction.” As for BEVs, we have them — and more are coming. They are a critical part of the drive to reduce carbon.

But given the scarcity of the minerals to make batteries, it’s important to optimize them for carbon reduction.

So, let’s do a little thought experiment.

Imagine a wheelbarrow with 500 pounds of lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and graphite.

All these minerals would be needed to make the batteries for a single 100 kWh BEV battery. Let’s say that someone was going to buy a gas-powered vehicle, but instead bought a BEV to help the environment. Well, they would reduce the amount of carbon going into the air by about 3.7 tons annually.

But what if we used that same amount of materials to make PHEVs? We could make six of them, and by displacing six gas-powered vehicles, about 20 tons of carbon emissions would be avoided.

Better yet, we could use that 500 pounds of minerals to make 90 hybrids, which would eliminate 138 tons of emissions by displacing 90 gas-powered vehicles. That’s 37 times as much carbon reduction than putting all those minerals in one BEV. “

I work for Toyota… here was part of an internal memo from a week ago. Its not about saving the planet.

I have to deal with technical reports and edit them all the time. A basic rule is that if one is going to use an acronym it need to be defined the first time it is used....otherwise a list of acronyms needs to be provided.

I was already stumbling over BEV since it wasn’t clear it meant battery...... is a BEV different than an EV? In what way is it different? And what is a PHEV? Or for that matter an O.G. or an EVP?
