One of the best men I have ever known killed someone while driving drunk. The horror of the whole situation turned his life around completely. I didn't know him during his wild days but knew him after he turned himself around and became a model citizen, respected businessman, and church deacon. To his dying day, he was emotionally devastated by what he had done.
Punishments need to be considered on a case-by-case basis. I think the judge in this case ruled better than it appears that you would.
