That's actually good advice for vehicles with light rear ends. Especially pickup trucks with big engines but nothing being hauled in the back. That rear end can be light as a feather compared to the power up front.

When I lived up North and in Germany (yes, I brought my 89 F-150 with me) I'd throw in several bags of sand and kitty litter, line 'em up right over the rear axle. Great stuff if your tires spin on slick ice. Adds traction.

We hardly ever get snow or ice down here in South Alabama, but when we do, half the vehicles in ditches are pickups with nothing in the bed.

Dude swore he had in four-wheel drive, too!
