It is true that there has been some substantial increase in crime in my area (Greenwich Village), particularly in shoplifting. This increase has followed some recent criminal justice “reforms,” notably limitations on the use of bail requirements to hold accused criminals pending trial. However, the rates of serious crimes, and particularly violent crimes, remain very low in my area, and indeed in most of this city and most other cities.

I think it was 2 years ago that Rick Moranis got sucker punched outside his Central Park west home. When a moderately famous retired actor gets punched in the Central Park west neighborhood then all of Manhattan is dangerous. There is no other way to look at it.

Heck Manhattan was safer in the 70's with the sex shops in Times Square and the hookers on 7th Avenue.

How often does this guy ride the Subways?

The City was safer under Mayor Dinkins, than the current and previous yahoo mayors. It's unfortunate because I loved visiting NYC and may never go back in my lifetime. I'm sure I am not alone in that assessment.

Finally the fact that you have to write this article in the first place means you know NYC is bad. Wasn't it Shakespeare who wrote: "The lady doth protest too much, methinks"?

Something else Menton doesn’t get: A lot of folks just don’t want to be the exception.
