I saw Hendrix once, back in the day. He opened the concert saying, "We're going to play real quiet, 'cause we have such respect for your ears." Ha! How he retained his hearing, I will never understand.

Unfortunately I never saw SRV, or Knopfler. I don't know Gilmour.

I never saw Hendrix, SRV or Knopfler/Dire Straits. I have seen David Gilmore/Pink Floyd twice.

Those are my guitar “heroes”. They provided me with endless inspiration - all I really ever wanted to do was play like them. So I bought the gear and practiced, performed, and played - all of my adult life.

Alas, the gift, the divine spark, the mojo of musical artistry eluded me. I concentrated so hard on playing like other people that I never achieved my own voice. I was competent as a sort of musical chameleon, mimicking the style of others, and I parlayed that into a very minor career as a musician (playing other peoples stuff).

I have no regrets. I did the best that I could. I entertained people. I had a blast, getting up on stage and making something special come to life. I loved playing the all-ages gigs where I could bring my kids. I would do it all over if I had the chance.
