Just to clarify, a married man under the above circumstances may be ordained, but once ordained, a priest may never marry, even if his wife dies.
All Christians were against artificial birth control until 1930 when the Anglicans approved its use for married couples at the Lambeth meeting.
Also, regarding the Black Death (and other plagues), people were grateful that priests did not have a family to worry about because it meant he was free to give people Last Rites, in addition to the care many priests gave to the ill.
