Mattell is virtue signalling and he is calling them on it. A downs child wouldn’t care what doll she had, she sees herself as normal.
It is possible for both to be true, i.e.: Matel is virtue signaling and also: It’s poor judgement to call it out in this way.
Such dolls - with disabilities, or with a different skin color - are aimed at NORMAL children, not handicapped ones.
NORMAL children are often charmed by such dolls.
My little, 4-year-old daughter once had a favorite doll - "Baby Sally" - that had lost an arm. It was also otherwise somewhat worse for the wear, so my wife and I calmly talked it over with our daughter and explained that we would dispose of the doll and get her a new one.
You should have seen her burst into tears and passionately defend her "disabled" doll, saying that "You don't throw someone away just because they're hurt!"
We still have that doll, twenty years later!
