To which I’ll add: I was a public high school teacher for many years. Well, I had this one student who constantly missed class. She’d show up maybe three or four days out of five. Her work was either turned in late, or not at all. There was never any explanation.
I suppose I could have found some way to get her to make up the work. But if she didn’t care, why should I? She didn’t have the points at the end of the semester, so I failed her.
It was only later that I learned that her mother was terminally ill, and was dying at home. Under the circumstances, this student wasn’t slacking. She was actually behaving heroically.
I should have dug deeper into her situation. It was a mistake I never made again.

That is also why when we feel down (or are having a bad day) it is essential to offer a random act of kindness to someone else—for no reason.
The day will get a lot better—in a hurry.
