One of the few reliable truths in electoral politics is that voters like tall presidents. The average U.S. president is about two inches taller than the average U.S. man, who is 5’9”.
Recent presidents have skewed even larger: Every president since Jimmy Carter (5’9.5”) has been 5’11.5” or taller. We haven’t elected a president smaller than the average man in nearly 130 years, when short king William McKinley won his election. “We are a species that equates larger size with maturity, leadership and sex appeal,” wrote Jay Mathews in the Washington Post in 1999.
“If we were like some insects, where adults are smaller than larvae, we might not think this way. But we do.” So it stands to reason that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who is thirstily gunning for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, would want to, let’s say, amplify his stature. Rumor has it that the governor is around 5’9”. His expected closest competitor in the GOP primary, Donald Trump, was, at 6’3”, our third-tallest president, a fact he repeats to himself five times in the mirror every morning before taking a deep, restorative breath and going on to face the day. And the man DeSantis would have to face in the general election, Joe Biden, clocked in at 6-foot-even at his 2023 physical. (Biden measured just 5 feet, 11.65 inches in 2021, an enduring mystery that suggests either some kind of supernatural yoga practice or a White House physician with poor attention to detail.)

YOu’re right.
I think too, Trump was getting some direct feedback from the Desantis camp. IOWs behind the scenes stuff that DS was up to, and Trump couldn’t let it go.
He’s giving the guy a taste of what it’s going to be like. A small taste of what’s to come,
Sad, that these two have to waste time going after each other, b ut DS has picked his team, and it’s made up of the all the usual suspects of GOP elite POS two bit politicians.
The best, most effective, most conservative governor in the fifty states at present, served in the military overseas, and he's a "gutless wonder". Do you know anything about the man at all?
You're worship of Trump has you speaking irrationally. And you certainly do have a lot of company on FR, which all those democrats you claim to oppose are loving every minute of.
Unfounded statements like this are needless, counterproductive, and at their base, completely without merit.
Truer words were never spoken. We can expect to see lots more of such tripe in the days to come. As well as far too many FReepers lost in the Cult of Trump who are happy to sing its praises.
You didn’t answer at all. You diverted with “president”. Being president is NOT having MIL training or any experience. Stop obfuscating.
I said President. President Trump commanded our Military. What do you want here? That position stands above any one who has served, my self included, with the exception of other Presidents. You're making some lame attempt to bad mouth Trump for not serving which is water long passed under the bridge. It's old hack and meaningless. He probably has more 'military' experience than you have (just a WAG). amiright?
Yes. I’m a woman so that shouldn’t be a shock.
Again, you are pretending that being Pres is like actually SERVING IN THE MIL. It is NOT. Period.
Do you say that about BillyBoy Klintoon? Didn’t think so.
(I already stated I don’t much get concerned over MIL service - just don’t like the hypocrisy. At least EverTrumpers should be consistent over the years of past presidents.)
I’m a she.
And the fact you could not answer my question speaks volumes. Crickets.
Only your pal here tried to come back with a non-sequitur.
You’re right and we are…
Served in combat?
Stay where’s he wanted and good.
He’s not ready for prime time Ron
I don't know. I said "served in the military overseas". If that's so important to you, maybe you should do some homework.
But why bother? It's quite apparent your dislike of DeSantis has little rational basis. You see him as an obstacle to Donald Trump, and that supercedes all else.
And DeSantis hasn't even declared yet.
“It’s quite apparent your dislike of DeSantis has little rational basis.”
Huh?
I guess the 65% of us liking Trump over Desantis are all irrational?
Trump is the best man for the job. The only thing I hear from people like you and other Trump haters on this forum, is that you have a visceral hate and contempt for Trump.
I don’t think any of us hate Desantis in the same way. Raionally, I think he’s an opportunist who lacks the depth of experience that Trump has.
You should watch the Levin interview of Trump last night. It’s all about the friends Trump had BEFORE he ran for office, who loved the guy, and wrote letters of praise to him, thanking him.
People like , Ted Kennedy, Alex Baldwin and Bill Clinton to name a few.
These people openly despise the man because of politics.
The more I see and hear Desantis the more he turns me off. He’s really not that smart in my mind, and he clearly lacks a creative side.
Trump is on the money every time he speaks.
In summary, it’s not irrational to say Desantis is a light weight. He’s probably a good governor, or at least was, but he’s not presidential timber, and most important, you and people like Romney, Ryan, McConnell, the Bushes and Karl Rove can support the guy all you want, but he’s a RINO like they are.
Sorry, but you’re waaaaaaaaaaay out numbered on this one....
Nope. There you go again, stretching words in vain to make a point. No, just the folks who see the world in strictly black and white terms. It's nice to be loyal, but when that keeps you from seeing anything good in any other thing, it become unhealthy. Thankfully, that is not the majority of Trump supporters.
As I have said before, and find myself having to repeat over and over... they are both good men, albeit with very different personalities and styles. If one was rational it would not be so difficult for you to see this. I have voted for both men on a couple of occasions, and will do so again. Comprende?
Outnumbered? Maybe. As for the rest, time will tell. Meanwhile, save your energy for the enemy, who is happy to watch you expend yourself against those who are on your side.
If Trump gets the GOP nod in 2024, he gets my vote just like he did in 2016 and 2020. He certainly does come across as ready for a fight if he regains the Presidency, so I say let him have at it. He knows who his enemies are this time around.
Meanwhile, DeSantis keeps things heading rightward at the state level -- that suits me fine.
But the real question here is, if DeSantis ends up the GOP candidate, will you vote for him?
OMG, really?
Are you seriously comparing being part of “military academy” in high school as the equal of being a Navy officer stationed in Iraq?
Please, please say you’re being “sarcastic”.
(Never mind your ludicrous remarks about his uniform - duh, it’s fatigues vs. full dress.)
Good God, childish as Trump.
“But the real question here is, if DeSantis ends up the GOP candidate, will you vote for him?”
That’s a tough one, Joe. The only way Trump doesn’t get the nod, it’s because he died.
Please refer to post #54, before you blow out a tonsil screaming at me, young lady....
Nice dodge, but no dice. Will you or won’t you?
Probably not....and that says a lot doesn’t it. It’s not about DeSantis, if anyone else wins, I won’t vote for them.
I’m actually, starting to think that Desantis will not run. He might even join up and support Trump.
