I think his best performance was in “Will Penny.” I read somewhere that was his favorite role.

Back in the 90's, in my radio days, I had the absolute honor of sitting down for an afternoon interview with Charlton Heston, and you knew it was Charlton Heston when he walked in a room. "Larger than Life" is a perfect description. He was there stumping for a conservative candidate in our state's upcoming election, and we talked a bit about that, but we mainly talked about his promotion of the ongoing revival at the time of Touch of Evil, that fantastic 1959 noir he starred in, and which was Orson Welles' last great turn as a director. He was an ardent admirer of the film, and of Welles, who he said was seriously undervalued by Hollywood. He told such great stories, in that voice, and was so generous with his time, his wisdom, and his sense of humor. It's such a vivid memory, even more than 20 years on. You knew you were in the presence of a Legend, and a true American.
